Do you know what a hard gainer is? These are guys who work and work as hard as they can and still do not seem to put on any muscle. I used to be one of those guys until I discovered the secret.
I went to the gym less often. That's right, less often. I used to go every other day, whether I wanted to or not. I thought that was the way to go, but the truth is, muscle is built through rest not through working out. So it seems that by using my pattern of working out, I was not allowing myself enough rest.
Here is what is actually happening. When you exercise your muscles, the repetitions are actually damaging the muscle fibers. When the muscle heals itself, over the next few days, it creates scar tissue. The scar tissue is actually stronger than the original tissue. This is how muscle is built.
For guys like us, the hard gainers, we need to exercise less frequently but we need to push as hard as we can when we do work out. When you do the bench press, for example, the weight needs to be heavy enough so that you can only do six or eight reps in the first set. The second set, you should really struggle to do six sets. Of course, you should never work this hard without a spotter.
After workout out as strenuously as you can, and I recommend no more than about 20-30 minutes, you need to rest for 2-3 days test the pattern to see what works for you.
